John Mitchell was the fifth president of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). Still revered by UMWA members, he led the miners to victory in the Great Anthracite Strike of 1902. The John Mitchell Monument is located in Courthouse Square in Scranton, Pennsylvania; a few miles away is the Anthracite Heritage Museum.
